In the world of seasonal living, it's easy to get swept away by the enchanting routines shared by talented creators: curated spring mornings, cottagecore wardrobes, and daydreams that feel like scenes from a Jane Austen novel. While inspiring, they can sometimes leave the more modest fairies among us feeling disheartened, as though our own lives fall short of the magic.

Other times, in our desire to recreate that picture-perfect spring aesthetic, we become so fixated on how things should look that we lose touch with how the season truly feels. And in doing so, we miss the gentle beauty of spring’s true essence and magic.

That’s why in this article, I’m sharing 5 very simple and doable ways to live seasonally in spring, no elaborate routines or picture-perfect scenes with a million antique props required. Just soft, manageable shifts that help you reconnect with the season’s soft rhythm and gently romanticize your everyday life, right where you are.

1- Spring-Cleaning & Decluttering

Of course, we can’t talk about seasonal living in spring without mentioning the classic spring-cleaning. After a long season of coziness and inward retreat, giving your home a gentle refresh can feel like breathing in new life.

Spring, the season of renewal, invites us to shed the heaviness of winter, not just in our wardrobes, but in our homes and hearts, too. Now that the days are warmer and the windows can stay open longer, it's the perfect time to freshen up forgotten corners and let the breeze sweep through your space while you remove all the dust.

Plan your Spring-Cleaning

Remember, there’s no need to tackle everything all at once. Spring lasts for about 12–13 weeks, and you can absolutely spread out your spring-cleaning and decluttering at a pace that feels nourishing rather than overwhelming. Try this soft, simple approach:

  • List every room or area in your home.

  • For each room, break the tasks down into small, manageable steps (ex: "declutter the closet" or "deep-clean the windows").

  • Add any light maintenance jobs you’ve been putting off, like repainting a patch of wall or tightening a wobbly doorknob. However, if it feels like too much, save those fixes for summer.

  • Assign one room per week, or give yourself 2–3 weeks for larger areas.

Then within each week, sprinkle the tasks into your schedule in a way that feels gentle and realistic.

Tips for Decluttering

For your decluttering journey, I highly recommend drawing inspiration from the KonMari Method by Marie Kondo, as shared in her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. What makes her approach so unique and aligned with a seasonal, soul-led life, is that she encourages you to organize by category rather than by room, and to tune into your feelings when making decisions.

Place all items from a category (like clothing) into one big pile. Then, lovingly take each item in your hands and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If it doesn’t, thank it for its place in your life, and let it go, either by selling it, donating it or disposing of it responsibly.

If you’re unsure, create a “maybe” pile. Place those items in a box or bag and set a reminder on your calendar to revisit them in 3–6 months. If you haven’t thought about or needed them by then, it might be time to part ways.

Tip: For visual learners, Marie Kondo’s illustrated guide, Spark Joy, offers wonderful visuals for folding and organizing your items in a simple, space-saving and beautiful way.

2- Spring Activities

The joy of each season lies in the things you can only do at that particular time of year. You savour them more deeply because you know they won’t last forever. Depending on where you live, spring activities may vary. So do check out your local traditions or activities, but don’t let those “traditions” spark any FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)!

Always remember: a season simply is. You can fully enjoy it by being present, slowing down, and mindfully noticing the simple, beautiful gifts spring offers, many of which are completely free. Here are some gentle and joy-filled activities to help you tune into the rhythm of the season and reconnect with the natural world around you:

Create a Seasonal Moodboard

Before the flowers bloom and while there’s still a winter chill in the air, I love to prepare for spring by creating a seasonal moodboard. On Pinterest, I keep a board called Seasonal Living with four sub-boards, one for each season. Pinning beautiful, atmospheric images helps me immerse in the mood of spring and often sparks lovely ideas for seasonal activities I might want to do.

Lately, I’ve also been using a bullet journal, which adds such a tactile joy to the process. At the beginning of each season, I print a seasonal moodboard and paste it across a double-page spread. It becomes a visual and emotional anchor. A dreamy, aesthetic transition into the new season that reminds me to soak it all in, no matter how busy life gets.

You might also like to print a few seasonal images and pin them to a cork board or tape them on your wall, either in your bedroom or workspace, as both decoration and inspiration throughout the spring.

Go Outside & Enjoy Spring in Nature

Spring is right at our doorstep! From the crocuses blooming in sidewalk gardens to the birds chirping in chorus and blossoms overhead, nature gently awakens all around us. Even a simple walk through your neighbourhood can be deeply uplifting if only you take the time to notice the little things. The earthy scent of the soil, the tiny green buds on branches, the joyful return of birdsong.

Spring changes quickly, one week to the next can bring a whole new bloom! Take delight in tracking these transformations. They offer such sweet and soul-nourishing moments if we slow down enough to really see them through the wondrous eyes of our inner child.

When the weather’s warm enough, why not plan a little picnic in the park? One of our favourite spring traditions is spending a day at the local botanical garden and having a picnic there. It’s such a heart-filling way to enjoy the season, especially for nature lovers living in the city.

If you can, plan a spring daytrip somewhere green and blossoming. Explore a countryside village, go hiking in a nearby forest, or visit a blooming apple or cherry orchard. You might even find a blooming field of flowers (like the iconic tulip fields in the Netherlands!) that feels straight out of a storybook.

Discover Springtime Local Festivities

Perhaps your town has a spring festival, a flower show, or a charming Easter egg hunt happening in the community. These seasonal gatherings are often filled with simple delights and nostalgic joy.

Here in the province of Quebec, one of our most iconic spring traditions is visiting the cabane à sucre (or "sugar shack"). This early-spring outing involves visiting a local maple farm where we enjoy a hearty, maple-syrup-infused meal (yes, even the savoury dishes!), listen to traditional Quebec folk music (which reminds me of Irish folk music in style), and maybe even join in a little dancing. It’s such a vibrant and heartwarming celebration of spring when it’s still very cold outside.

There may be similar traditions near you, too! Whether it’s a maple syrup festival, a flower parade, or a small-town fair, participating in local springtime festivities is a lovely way to feel connected to your region and the season. And if you're lucky enough to live somewhere like Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls, where the town has a festival for every season, don’t miss the chance to join in. One year, I’d love to attend the famous Tulip Festival in Ottawa!

3- Spring Decor

One of the loveliest ways to celebrate the seasons is by letting your home shift with them, just like nature does. I’ve always adored the idea of changing the ambiance of your space to mirror the energy outside. Some people go all out, transforming their entire decor palette with each season. But truly, you don’t need to do it full-on to feel the magic. Even the smallest seasonal touches can breathe fresh life into your home and make spring come alive indoors.

Here are some simple ways to invite spring into your home:

  • Pick up a bouquet of tulips (or any spring flower you love) and place them somewhere you’ll see them often. Watching them slowly bloom will feel your heart with joy every single day!

  • Plant spring bulbs in indoor pots (such as hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses) and top them with a bit of moss. It’s like having a miniature spring meadow that will bloom inside your home.

  • Switch up your cushion covers in the living room or bedroom. Soft pastels like blush pink, butter yellow, lilac, Robin egg blue and light sage green can instantly make your space feel fresh and joyful.

  • Change your bedsheets to lighter tones, maybe something floral, gingham, or just a dreamy spring hue.

  • Rotate the art or prints in your frames to reflect the season, botanical illustrations, countryside blooming landscapes, or anything that whispers “springtime.”

  • Use a new blend of essential oils in your diffuser to set the mood. Think lilac, bergamot or rose for a bright and uplifting scent.

If you’re just beginning to decorate for the seasons and don’t have a collection of spring decor yet, don’t feel pressured to do it all at once. Instead, start small. Maybe focus on one room, or even just one corner. Whether it’s your bedroom, your cozy reading nook, or a windowsill, let that space become your little seasonal sanctuary.

For inspiration, there’s a French artist I absolutely adore, Caro From Woodland, who decorates her home in the most beautiful seasonal ways. Her space always looks like the charming window of a boutique! Even if you don’t speak French, the visuals speak for themselves (start video at 2:14 to skip the intro):

4- Gardening

Spring is nature’s whisper to begin again, to return to the soil, to plant, to nurture. It’s the season of seedlings, and of rediscovering the joy of tending to living things. After a long winter, there’s something deeply soothing about placing your hands in the earth and reconnecting with the rhythm of nature.

If you have a garden, you’re in luck, there’s no better time to start planting than spring. Whether it’s vegetables, herbs, or flowers, this is the moment to dream up what your outdoor space could become in the months ahead. But even if you don’t have a backyard, gardening is still possible, and just as fulfilling.

If you have a balcony, even a small one, you’d be surprised by how much you can grow with a bit of creativity and care. From herbs to cherry tomatoes to strawberries, little pots can go a long way. This incredible video will completely shifts how you see small-space gardening:

And if you don’t have any outdoor space at all, that doesn’t mean you can’t still garden. You can bring a little slice of nature indoors. Place a few potted herbs on your kitchen windowsill. Basil, thyme, and rosemary are easy to care for and smell delightful when you brush your fingers through them. Or simply adopt a few indoor plants, they can bring so much life, peace, and beauty into a space.

Tending to them becomes a grounding ritual. No matter where you live, gardening on any scale offers a way to slow down and to connect with the season at hand. It’s not just about growing things. It’s about growing with them.

5- Eating Locally and Seasonally in Spring

What better way to live at the pace of the seasons than to eat what Mother Earth has to offer at that time? Seasonal eating isn’t just a symbolic way to connect with nature, it also supports our health and wellbeing. In fact, the foods that grow in each season are exactly what our bodies need to thrive during that time. Spring’s tender greens, herbs, and fresh vegetables help us gently cleanse, reawaken and lighten after winter’s heavier meals that kept us warm and cozy.

When we choose to eat locally and seasonally, we align ourselves with the natural flow of life. We support local growers, reduce our ecological footprint, and invite more freshness, and variety into our meals. I’ve dedicated an entire article to guide you through how and what to eat in spring, and how to make it easier for you.
